APUS Published Brazil's Mobile Application Analysis Report - Big Data Unravels User Behavi...
On July 16th, APUS published a report titled “World’s Mobile App Analysis Report - Brazil”. It explains us the tendency and behavior of Brazilians towards mobile application. For instance, since the cost of smartphones in Brazil isn’t too high, Samsung, LG and other mid-range phones are most welcome by the locals; the most used social media applications are WhatsApp, Messenger and Facebook, and the types of games they often prefer are leisure, action and sports.
Regarding internet connection, Brazil is famous for providing a nationwide Wi-Fi coverage. Nearly 6 cities are on Wi-Fi, while 4G network has just been launched quite recently. Furthermore, Brazilians internet users are often perceived as “Healthy” users. Internet usage during daytime is a lot higher than nighttime, whereas internet users in China are more active during nighttime.
Figure1: Game Categories Chart in Brazil’s Google PlayThe amount of gaming app is low on downloads, but high on usage.
In the report, games are proportionally distributed into different categories; those who have bigger percentage are leisure, action and sports. Leisure type takes up to 28% which is a lot higher than India’s leisure game proportion of 12%. In early 2014, many data analysts from the same field had indicated that Brazil’s mobile game market was bound to be a very profitable business.
Figure 2: Detailed Distribution of Game CategoriesLooking at the installation amount, only in the range of half to 1 million and 50 to 100 million will the distribution rate of games be higher than other software application. In the range of 100 million to 1 billion and 1 billion to 5 billion, we can only see the distribution of software applications, but not games. Apart from the 6:4 software-games ratio, the real ratio of software-games installation on users’ phones is 9:1.
Even though the installation number is low, game applications usage are still very high. Brazilians’ interest on games varies a lot from one to another; they wouldn’t download many games which belong to the same category. Among 50 most downloaded app, games can rarely be seen, but their weekly usage rate is fairly high. This same phenomenon also occurs in pictures, music, shopping and other type of applications.
Social media is most welcome by Brazilian; Tools’ download is the highest, but low on usage.
Compared to the low download but high usage games, tools’ applications have a big download count, but the usage number is basically its half, this reflects that users’ necessity towards this kind of applications is fairly low. For video, lifestyle and news type of applications, their download and usage amount are nearly equal.
Figure 3: Chart of different type of applicationsMoreover, Brazilians will install 58 applications in average, but only use 13 every day. This surpasses the total average of world’s android apps installation of 42. The most opened apps by Brazilian users are generally communication-type applications (messaging + social media), tools and games. This is quite in contrast to Google Play’s most popular and most installed applications.
WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, and other similar apps are the type of apps that are popular among Brazilians. This reflects the hospitality of this Samba country’s people, caring for strangers and also help them communicate better with each other.
Samsung, Motorola and other mid-range phones are extremely popular, WiFi usage is high
After analyzing Brazilians’ cellphones statistics, Samsung, LG and Motorola seem to be monopolizing the market, and Samsung nearly seizes 50% of it. Chinese phones are starting to have bigger impact on this market, and forgeries have also begun to take place. However, all top 10 cellphones in Brazil are still either Samsung or Motorola. Regarding price, those top 10 cellphones cost less than 1500 RMB, an average of 1014 RMB.
Figure 4: Brazilians’ Mobile Phones Usage Behavior AnalysisThe mentioned phones above basically come with lower specifications, Top 10 phone models mostly have screen size of 4 inch or above; only 3 models that are less than 4 inch. This is quite the contrary of big screens trend in China, Korea, Europe and America. Besides, their RAMs are usually 1G or below, which is similar to India.
Currently, the major internet connection in Brazil depends on Wi-Fi, 3G or 2G. Wi-Fi has bigger percentage among all, takes up 56%. 3G network is at 29%, twice the amount of 2G; and 4G coverage is still at 1%, since it is still in early development stage.
Figure 5: BrazilThe fact that Wi-Fi is the most common internet access method in Brazil is actually one of the outcomes of their “Smart City” plan. For example, Buzios, a tourist seaside city in Rio, is Latin America’s first “Smart City” experimental site. Ever since, more and more cities in Brazil are getting more Wi-Fi coverage, taking part in “Smart City” construction as well. This might be one of the reasons why Wi-Fi usage is reasonably high in Brazil.
Some figures from this same field state that Rio de Janeiro’s 2016 Olympic Games is coming soon and Brazil will catch the attention of people from all over the world. Nevertheless, this article is mainly focused on describing the condition of mobile application usage in Brazil, what kind of apps they use the most, as well as its market growth.
